Pombo as "Wildlife Hero"
by Tom Randall
Defenders of Wildlife, which ardently opposed any improvements that would
really enable the Endangered Species Act to actually recover species, is now
running a survey in which you can nominate a wildlife hero whom you feel
has done the most to save species.
In the opinion of the American Land Rights Association, that person is House
Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo for his perseverance and courage
in passing the Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act (TESRA).
TESRA, would for the first time, require a scientifically peer-reviewed
recovery plan when a species is listed as threatened or endangered.
It also provides compensation and incentives for private landowners,
important because most endangered species live on private land. This will
do much to improve the miserable record of the current ESA that has seen
only 10 of nearly 1300 listed species recover over the act's 31-year
history.
We suggest you go to the link shown below and cast your entry for Chairman
Pombo. Four entry fields on the ballot are mandatory. They are:
Field 1: "What is your wildlife hero's name?" Here, of course, you
should enter Chairman Richard Pombo.
Field 2: "What's the best way to contact your nominee?" We suggest you
check "Contact me first" since neither the chairman nor any member of his
staff have any involvement in this campaign.
Field 6: "Why is this person a wildlife hero?" We suggest you answer
this in your own words, using the information above.
Field 7: This requires a first name, last name, e-mail address and
phone number. What you enter should be what you feel comfortable with but
the fields must be entered.
Then, click on "submit."
