Reforming the Postal Service

Editor: Don Soufer's piece on Postal Service reform is timely. Each day, my mailbox is at least 3/4's full of junk/unsolicited mail. This amount multiplied by the four (4) adults living in my house, has a result of about 2-3 pounds of mail delivered each day.

The Postal Service is again raising the cost of 1st Class Postage (to 37 cents this time). Instead of raising the 1st Class rate, why can they not raise the many .06 cents and other low cost junk mailings?  This would raise much more money for their always empty coffers.

When the subject was raised about the Government transfering the Postal Service to a "more controlled and economically experienced" organization, it was decided that a private enity would be more efficient and money saving and so they said they did it. It has proved to be neither, but just another bottomless government pit, with less professionalism and economy.

Our mail is often not delivered until 1800-1830 at night.  We seldom have the same carrier and mail is always getting mis-delivered.  It has become such a normal experience, we neighbors just self-deliver if it is in the immediate area.

It is well known that postal reform will never happen, but I guess it remains to be seen. It would make a lot more sense, and make a lot of difference if the 1st Class postage users were not to be punished as they are under its current structure and management.

Cordially,  Shirley Roberts
